Starting from 2009, KSK English department has been conducting a research collaborating with HKU to investigate the feasibility of the use of new literacy in teaching and learning. In early 2010, the research has come to the final stage and significant findings can be drawn from the collected data to support that new literacy is considerably in tune with students’ learning needs and, more importantly, enhances the effectiveness of both teaching and learning.
HKU organized a “New Literacy Action Research Conference” to let participating schools share key insights and good practices of infusing new literacy teaching and learning in the English language curriculum. With the invitation from HKU, our English teachers Mr Hastings Chim, Miss Mandy Li, Mr Cyrus Ie and teaching assistant Mr Jason Cheung delivered a talk entitled ‘From print to multimedia: Helping students with dyslexia to learn English’ on 20th March 2010. Specifically focusing on the needs of students with dyslexia, the talk provided audience with practical teaching methodologies and suggestions for teaching students with great learning diversity through new literacy.
In the display session, a booth was set up to demonstrate the harvest of our research, including students’ photo-stories, lesson plans, and detailed analysis of collected data. Audiences positively commented on our displayed materials and highly appreciated students’ high-quality work.
